WHY GENERATION RX IS IMPORTANT TO US:
CHASE BALLINGER, Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate
Class of 2014
"I think Generation Rx is a program that really touches lives, informing individuals about the dangers of drug abuse without resorting to simple scare tactics. Coming from younger student pharmacists, the youth of our region really relate to and identify with the things that we say. I really enjoy being part of such a driven team and knowing that if even one person realizes the magnitude of the prescription drug abuse problem in our country, then we have accomplished what we set out to do."

"The importance of Generation Rx is simply its ability to easily and effectively inform. With the diligent work of our Generation Rx team, youth and adults will gain the tools, confidence, and knowledge necessary to combat any personal, familial, and/or societal issues that arise as the causation of prescription drug abuse."

"I think Generation RX is a great program, because it teaches kids about the harms of prescription drugs. A lot of kids think that because it was prescribed by a doctor, it is okay for them to take it, even if it was not prescribed for them. We live in a region where there is a lot of prescription drug abuse and if this program can help just one child stay away from that abuse, then it is worth it. We want to help change the prescription drug abuse that we see from a day to day basis... that is what this program is all about."

"Generation Rx is an important topic in our occupation of pharmacy. We are able to reach out to younger teens and really inform them of what drug abuse is and how to handle peer pressure from other classmates. It is important that every teen is informed about overdosing and the use of illegal drugs before making the decision to do it. Hopefully we will give a new perspective of drug abuse by reaching out to these individuals."

"As an almost lifelong resident of the area, I know exactly how large a threat prescription drug abuse poses to the people of Southern Appalachia. I have seen lives taken and livelihoods destroyed, but I do not blame the people who become addicted to these products. The failing, I know, rests with us: we owe it to the people of this culture to educate, inform, and motivate the people so they are able to make the right decisions."

"I take GenerationRx to heart. Growing up in Southwest Virginia, I learned at an early age what drug use can do to a person, but I was not prepared to deal with those situations. I have a unique opportunity to give students real-life stories about how drug use has affected people in my life, but more importantly I can let these children know how to get help if faced with a similar situation. My hope is to break the cycle of drug addiction before it can begin."

"The dramatic increase in rates of prescription drug abuse and overdose in recent years has caused many people to question these medications' value. By working with youth to help slow this increase, not only are we helping to change people's lives, but we are also helping to ensure these medications remain available to those who truly need them."

"I have lived in East Tennessee all of my life. After growing up in this area and watching prescription drug abuse tear apart families and lives, just like my own family, I knew something had to be done. Generation Rx puts the responsibility and opportunity for student pharmacists and other health care professionals to make a difference in the future of our community. We not only educate residents of the area on prescription drug abuse, but we also encourage others to help us fight this plague in our home. We are making a difference and will continue to do so."

"Generation Rx is very important to me. I am passionate about teaching of drug abuse because of
it's negative impacts and the fact that it is totally preventable. I am excited to be a part of this team, as we are motivated to educate our region and encourage those who need it to get help. Prescription drug misuse and abuse is a growing problem, and my hope is that with each presentation we can help to
change or save a life. I am honored and excited to be a part of this Generation Rx team!"

"The Generation Rx is a powerful program that is changing lives in our communities one presentation at a time. Our students share personal testimonies about how addiction has impacted their lives and they educate the community about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse. The youth we reach through our programs are listening and want to help us fight the prescription drug abuse epidemic in our region. It is an honor to work with these students to bring Generation Rx to Eastern Tennessee and Southwest Virginia."

“Generation Rx is a revolutionary program tailored for this generation of youth and the challenges they face with prescription drug abuse. We are really addressing relevant problems in an engaging, positive way that I feel will be very influential to those we reach out to. I have seen first-hand the life-crushing effects of prescription drug abuse, and I wish to prevent those mistakes from being repeated by our promising young
people.”

"Generation Rx is important to me because we are able to reach area youth about the dangers and myths surrounding the prescription substance abuse epidemic. Growing up and working in the area, I have seen how prescription drug abuse has become a problem that destroys families, friendships, and lives. Our goal is to reach kids to show them that they have the power to make positive choices in their own lives to avoid this snare, as well as being able to help those in their lives as well. Being able to hear this message from student pharmacists, our audience is able to relate better to the importance of our topic and amplify its impact."

"Generation Rx offers an incredible opportunity to educate our peers and young people about the rising problem of prescription drug abuse. Growing up in this region, I’ve seen firsthand how it can destroy lives. It is heartbreaking, yet completely preventable. I’m honored to be a part of Generation Rx.
As students, this program offers us the chance to get out of the classroom and have a positive influence in the lives of others. If our efforts impact even just one person, then we have made a difference to be proud of."

"In our society, we are facing many problems with prescription abuse among the different generations. Generation Rx is a team of future pharmacists that focuses on the prevention of this abuse. To be able to be a part of a group of young people that take time out of their lives to inform and persuade the young generation about substance abuse is very important to me. I want to be able to make a difference in the world and this organization has allowed me that privilege. I hope to see Generation Rx flourish and persuade individuals to realize prescription abuse is wrong; then I can say that our team has truly accomplished it's goal."

"As future medical professionals, Generation Rx is a great opportunity for us to influence the lives of individuals with a non-threatening approach. Being able to educate these individuals about the negative effects of prescription and OTC drug abuse helps make our education more fulfilling and seem even more worthwhile. I am so grateful to have this chance to work with my peers to make this committee as great as it can be. "

"I wanted to be involved with Generation Rx for a few reasons. Prescription drug abuse has had an enormous impact on our community. Though none of my close friends or family have been seriously affected by prescription drug abuse, there have been many people I have known, or friends and family of those I am close to, who have lost someone they loved to this addiction. It is terrible for me to see the pain caused by a loved one lost when it could have been prevented. I hope that through my involvement with Generation Rx, I can help make a difference, and hopefully change the path of someone's life."

"The Generation Rx program is an opportunity to spread the knowledge and passion I have for the profession of pharmacy. As a student pharmacist, I have witnessed the detrimental effects abusing prescription medications can have. I have also seen the positive impact I can have on my community. It is my strong belief that if we work together as a team of healthcare professionals and as a community, we can begin to put an end to the prescription drug abuse epidemic. I am proud to be a part of such an inspiring and influential group and am thankful to have the opportunity to give back to my community through the Generation Rx initiative."

"Generation Rx is a program that I am both proud and honored to be a part of. As a future healthcare professional, I feel it is my duty to have a positive impact on society. Prescription drug abuse has been overlooked for way too long and sadly, has become a norm in many communities. I believe that public education is essential to the prevention and healing of this problem. By addressing this issue in our youth, we have the potential to not only save lives, but to change them forever."

"I believe that Generation Rx is a program that is going to change lives. It is easy to see that our society is good at prescribing and dispensing prescription drugs, but we aren't as good at helping patients with addiction to these medications. It is important to relay to patients and children that although prescriptions medications are safe when used correctly that they are also dangerous."

"Generation Rx is a very special program that I am both proud and honored to be a part of for many reasons. This program provides the opportunity for me to speak to my peers about the prescription drug abuse problem that is plaguing our generation. I am passionate about this program because rather than giving a grim and negative message, we focus on the positive—that is how to avoid addiction, how to seek out help if needed, and also how to help someone around you if they struggle with prescription drug abuse. This is about empowering a generation, empowering them to put a stop to this serious issue."

"Generation Rx addresses a situation that other substance abuse programs often overlook. The abundance of prescription drug abuse by the younger population seemed to fly below the radar until recently. Our team has come together wonderfully to raise awareness, provide pertinent information on prescription drugs, prevention of their abuse and the steps to take when faced with a drug abuse situation. We have influenced several lives already and there will be many more to follow. I look forward to being a part of this program and watching the impact we will have in our region long term."

"Generation RX is a gateway to our community’s youth, opening doors for us as pharmacy students to influence those that may come in contact with substance abuse or become susceptible to drug abuse themselves. Drug abuse is a situation that fractures homes, families, and communities. We get the opportunity as students to inform others of the danger, the ways to avoid, and the repercussions of drug
abuse. Generation RX is a team of students that have a passion to make a difference in the lives of our own generation."
